Abstract | The Philip H. Kennedy Collection consists of field recordings, field notes, and photographs that document the folk music traditions of North Carolina and surrounding states. Folklorist and French professor, Philip H. Kennedy, compiled most of the materials in the late 1950s and early 1960s, as part of his research on the ballad collecting and fieldwork of Cecil J. Sharp and Frank Clyde Brown, who previously travelled the region to compile and record traditional ballads, tunes, and music. The collection also includes other audio recordings created and compiled by Kennedy, including WUNC produced radio programs on folk music; interviews with folklorist, Dr. Amos Abrams; dubbed field recordings of women ballad singers from North Carolina; and a privately issued LP featuring folk songs and ballads by Philip H. Houston and classical piano by Laura Nancy Hasenpflug. |

Philip Houston Kennedy was the son of Frank Hunter Kennedy and Margaret "Rita" Kennedy, of Charlotte, N.C. He studied folklore at Indiana University and received his Ph.D. in Romance Studies, with an emphasis on French, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Back to TopThe Philip H. Kennedy Collection consists of field recordings, field notes, and photographs that document the folk music traditions of North Carolina and surrounding states.
As part of his research on traditional folk music and ballads, Philip H. Kennedy, a white folklorist and French professor, travelled the state of North Carolina to record old-time and traditional folk musicians that were previously recorded by folklorists and collectors, Cecil J. Sharp and Frank Clyde Brown. Kennedy was particularly interested in the musical and verbal memory of the previously recorded subjects, evaluating the processes and techniques of ethnomusicology and folklore work overtime, and the geographical distribution of folk songs and ballads throughout North Carolina. His research was published in the South Atlantic Bulletin ("Re-Eliciting Songs and Ballads from Living Informants of Early Collectors in the South", 1960) and North Carolina Folklore Journal ("Present Status of Ballad Collecting and Geographical Ballad Distributions in North Carolina", 1965). The collection contains Kennedy's original field recordings (Original Tape "OT"); dubs of Kennedy's original field recordings (New Copy "NC"); and other recordings, including commercial recordings, interviews, live recordings, radio programs, and unnumbered or unidentified recordings. Of particular note are the WUNC produced radio programs on folk music; interviews with folklorist, Dr. Amos Abrams; dubbed field recordings of women ballad singers from North Carolina; and a privately issued autographed LP by Philip H. Houston and Laura Nancy Hasenpflug. The split LP features Philip H. Houston singing folk music and ballads with guitar accompaniment, as well as classical piano by Laura Nancy Hasenpflug. Recordings are on 1/4" open reel audio, audiocassette, and LP.
The collection also includes Kennedy's extensive field notes, which consist of tape indexes, card files, tape logs, memos, writings, and printed materials, as well as photographs of the old-time and traditional folk musicians documented by Kennedy during his fieldwork across the state of North Carolina. Photographs consist mostly of black-and-white prints, but also include color prints, slides, and negatives.

Patterson: "Miss Lattye Eunice Arnold appeared a number of times in UNC stadium--at the invitation of Professor A. P. Hudson, head of the UNC Curriculum in Folklore--during his annual Carolina Folk Festival. Miss Arnold sang ballads like "Barbara Allen," wearing an old-fashioned poke bonnet and floor-length dress. Her home was in Wake County, north of Raleigh in the Barton’s Creek Township. According to the 1940 Federal Census, she was born about 1897. Mrs. Tom Bradshaw (Laura Petty Bradshaw, 1908-1993) lived west of Chapel Hill on the south side of Hwy 54 in the White Cross Community. I went with Phil Kennedy when he recorded a session with her in her home. As I recall, among other songs she sang the Child ballad "Fair Ellender and the Brown Girl." She had written down the words of songs she knew in a notebook. I recall that she suffered from a heart ailment. I was not aware at the time that her home was about a mile from where my Grandmother Patterson (née Nellie Atwater) was born and raised. Miss Lucy Maria Cobb (1877-1969)—a folklorist, author of "folk plays," and journalist. She was a daughter of Professor Collier Cobb of the UNC Geology Department. She wrote an M.A. thesis at UNC-CH in 1927 on folksongs she collected in this state. The Southern Historical Collection has her papers. I wrote an entry about her for the NCPedia." |

Also later a collection of American folksongs on Rounder Records for the Library of Congress Archive of American Folksongs. He later taught elsewhere. His folksong collection is in the American Folklife Center in Washington, D.C. and its catalogue gives more information.
