Abstract Becky Johnson has photographed bluegrass musicians, festivals, conferences, and related events since the 1980s. The collection includes photographs, negatives, slides, and other materials, chiefly 1980-2001, from a variety of festivals, performances, and other events. Major festivals and events represented include the Bass Mountain Bluegrass Festival, the Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver Bluegrass Festival, the Folk Alliance International Conference, the International Bluegrass Music Association's Annual Awards Show and Fanfest, MerleFest, Winterhawk, the Grand Ole Opry, the North Carolina Heritage Awards, and many others. Performers and others represented include Kenny Baker, the Bass Mountain Boys, Dale Ann Bradley, Sam Bush, Josh Graves, Jim and Jesse, Alison Drauss, Jimmy Martin, Art Menius, Del McCoury, Bill Monroe, the Osborne Brothers, Mike Seeger, Pete Seeger, Ralph Stanley, Doc Watson, and many others. Becky Johnson, originally from Concord, Mass., has photographed bluegrass musicians and festivals since 1977. Johnson later moved to North Carolina, where she has resided in Pittsboro and Wilkes County. She is married to Art Menius, a co-founder of the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA), a co-producer of MerleFest, and director of Appalshop. Becky Johnson has been an official photographer at MerleFest, the Bass Mountain Bluegrass Festival, Winterhawk, and other nationally recognized bluegrass festivals. Her book, Inside Bluegrass: 20 Years of Bluegrass Photography, was published in 1998. In addition to being a prolific photographer, Johnson is also an expert on open-fire cookery, which she has demonstrated at various festivals.

The Becky Johnson collection consists of photographs, negatives, slides, and printed materials documenting bluegrass festivals and other events.

Photographs, negatives, and slides consist of images from bluegrass festivals including MerleFest, the Bass Mountain Bluegrass Festival, the Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver Bluegrass Festival, Winterhawk, the Folk Alliance International Conference, the International Bluegrass Music Association annual festival and conference, the Poppy Mountain Bluegrass Festival, and many others.
