Abstract Stan Woodward is a white southern auteur and documentary filmmaker. The Woodward Studio Limited produces documentaries on southern folk culture through the themes of American foodway and related traditions. In the 1980s, Woodward served as director of the Media Arts Center and the Communication Wing at the Capital Children's Museum in Washington, D.C., where he got to know animator Chuck Jones. Woodward also worked as filmmaker-in-residence in Georgia, S.C., and other locations where he was involved in mentoring independent filmmakers and advising classroom teachers on how to teach students to create Super 8mm films. In the 1990s, Woodward worked on productions of Satellite Distance Learning Broadcasts for various television networks. The R. Stanley Woodward Collection consists of about 7500 items created or collected by Woodward, 1932-2014, including films, moving image materials, production notes, distribution and licensing contracts, and promotional and educational materials related to his films and other work promoting independent filmmaking. Films cover a wide range of topics, including southern food traditions; southern families, storytelling, folklore, and customs; African American dance, blues, and folk art; NASA, the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center, the Skylab Program, and astronauts; media programs on the novel To Kill a Mockingbird ; educational films; teaching filmmaking to students; the Capital Children's Museum; the University of South Carolina; serpents; and sharecroppers. Locations include South Carolina; Virginia; Georgia; North Carolina; Kentucky; Washington, D.C.; New York City; and Alabama. Some of the people associated with the films are food critic Craig Claiborne, John A. Burrison, filmmaker Frank Eastes, John Egerton, Harold Hausenfluck, Fred Wolfe, animator Chuck Jones, Richard Pillsbury, and folklorist Saddler Taylor. The moving image materials are in various media formats, including 16mm print film, DVCAM video, U-Matic video, Betacam SP video, Digital Betacam video, MiniDV video, VHS video, and DVDs. Stan Woodward is a white southern auteur and documentary filmmaker. The Woodward Studio Limited produces documentaries on southern folk culture through the themes of American foodway and related traditions. Woodward is known for his own style of filmmaking in which he uses hand-held cameras to make first-person singular documentary films. In the 1980s, Woodward served as the director of the Media Arts Center and the Communication Wing at the Capital Children's Museum in Washington, D.C. During this time and in the "Animation Corps, Media Center Animation Workshop,"Woodward developed a friendship with animator Chuck Jones. Woodward also worked as filmmaker-in-residence at various locations, including Cherokee County Schools in Georgia in the early 1980s; the Capital Children's Museum in Washington, D.C., from 1983 to 1989; Darien, Conn. circa 1971; and the South Carolina Arts Commission from 1972 to 1980. His work at as filmmaker-in-residence at the South Carolina Arts Commission included mentoring independent filmmakers and advising classroom teachers on how to teach students to create Super 8mm films. In the 1990s, Woodward collaborated with and made productions of Satellite Distance Learning Broadcasts for various television networks.

The R. Stanley Woodward Collection consists of approximately 8800 items by or collected by the white film director Stan Woodward from 1932 to 2014. The collection includes materials related to the making of Stan Woodward's films Brunswick Stew: Georgia Named Her; Georgia Claims Her , Brunswick Stew: A Virginia Tradition , Carolina Hash: A Taste of South Carolina: Burgoo!, Southern Stews: A Taste of the South , The Morris Chronicle, Hallowed Ground: Primitive Camp Meetings of the South Carolina Low Country, Rockfish Muddle, and Nothing to Prove. The collection also contains films and outtakes that Woodward worked on, such as It's Grits! , Lord Have Mercy: Olger's Store, The Sheep Stew of Dundas: A Gastronomical Delight , The People who take up Serpents, To Kill a Mockingbird: Then and Now, The Day Skylab Fell to the Earth , Afro-American Dance: Establishing A Cultural Heritage , Licorice Train, and The American Super-8 Revolution. Woodward collected educational films from various public school libraries. He also made and collected home movies of his family.

Woodward's original films from Woodward Studio are mostly concerned with food and folklore traditions in the South. Brunswick Stew: Georgia Named Her; Georgia Claims Her is about the tradition of brunswick stew in Georgia. Brunswick Stew: A Virginia Tradition is about brunswick stew in Brunswick County, Va. Carolina Hash: A Taste of South Carolinais about the history and popularity of hash in South Carolina. Burgoo! is a documentary about burgoo stew, mostly shot in Owensboro, Ky., Southern Stews: A Taste of the South is a combination of footage from Stan Woodward's food documentaries. The Morris Chronicleis a film about barbecue master and sharecropper Morris Peeples as he cooks a hog. It's Grits! follows Woodward as he asks the question, "Do you eat grits?" around the South and in New York City. The Sheep Stew of Dundas: A Gastronomical Delight shows stewmaking traditions in Dundas, Va. Lord Have Mercy: Olger's Store is about Jimmy Olgers, a man who tells stories from Olger's Store in Virginia.

The collection also includes production notes, distribution and licensing contracts, and promotional and educational materials related to Woodward's films. There is also material related to Woodward's work promoting filmmaking with southern arts organizations, including the South Carolina Arts Commission, and scattered clippings, receipts, award certificates, and film festival programs in which Woodward or his work were included.

Burgoo! (2008), a documentary about burgoo stew, a stew prepared by farmers and hunters in western Kentucky. The film was mostly shot in Owensboro, Ky. Series 2 includes inventory by Stan Woodward of Burgoo!tapes.

The Morris Chronicle (2006), a documentary film on Morris Peeples, a 93 year-old barbecue master as he cooks a hog in the old fashioned way.

People Who Take Up Serpents (1974), a documentary film on members of a branch of the Holiness churches who base their religious beliefs and practices on Bible verses.

The Sheep Stew of Dundas (2001), a documentary film on the stewmaking tradition of Dundas, Va., "Home of the World's Best Sheep Stew".

Skylab, The Day Skylab Fell to Earth, a documentary film on NASA, George C. Marshall Space Flight Center, the Skylab Program, and astronauts.

Southern Stews: A Taste of the South( 2002), a combination of footage from a variety of Woodward's food documentaries that looks at the connections among southern stew making traditions. Series 2 includes inventory by Stan Woodward of A Southern Stew: A Taste of the South SS 1-46 tapes.

Other materials include home movies; interviews; educational films produced or collected by Woodward; materials related to student film and animation workshops; materials related to Capital Children’s Museum exhibits and programs, including footage of Nek Chand, who built the museum's sculpture garden. Materials are made up mostly of videotapes, but also includes moving image film and audio recordings. Moving image materials are on 16mm motion picture film, Betacam, Betacam SP, DVCAM, Hi-8, MiniDV, U-Matic, and VHS, while audio recordings are on 1/4" open reel.

Brunswick Stew: Georgia Named Her; Georgia Claims Her , 22 September 2000, DVCAM [SPR 1-5]

Documents the annual Sproull family reunion in Cartersville, Ga., which is centered around the communal cooking of a traditional recipe carefully maintained and passed down from earlier generations of stewmasters to the current stewmaster, who had appointed assistants to help with the two-day cooking process in a huge black iron pot that belongs to the Sproull clan.

The sister church in Greenville, S.C., rallied in support of the Newport chruch; Gretchen Robinson, then a reporter for the Greenville News, first wrote about the story, then applied to the South Carolina Arts Commission for Stan Woodward to assist her in shooting a documentary that followed the case and the story; documentary about snake handlers; 54 minutes.

Other audiovisual materials include recordings related to Capital Children’s Museum exhibits and programs, Woodward's "video resume", and unidentified folklore projects. Moving image materials are on 8mm motion picture film, 16mm motion picture film, Betacam, Betacam SP, DVCAM, Hi-8, MiniDV, U-Matic, and VHS, while audio recordings are on 1/4" open reel and audiocassette.

Arrangement: Arranged alphabetically by film title.

Material from Woodward's work as filmmaker and educator, including production notes, distribution and licensing contracts, and promotional and educational documents for his films, particularly The American Super-8 Revolution, Brunswick Stew: A Virginia Treasure,, It's Grits!, and The Day Skylab Fell to Earth. There are also scattered materials related to his work promoting filmmaking with southern arts organizations including the South Carolina Arts Commission, as well as film festival programs in which Woodward or his work were included. There is also a small number of photographs of a 1983 mobile exhibit Woodward designed for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Va., entitled Illusions: The Art of the Moving Image. Other items include news clippings and film reviews; receipts; purchase orders; award certificates and plaques; address books; a small number of animated flip books; a film-splicer used by Woodward in editing and assembling his films; and a helmet, hand-painted with bulls-eye and "I AM READY FOR SKYLAB."

Note that original file folder titles have, for the most part, been retained.
