Since August 2017, we have added ethnic and racial identities for individuals and families represented in collections. To determine identity, we rely on self-identification; other information supplied to the repository by collection creators or sources; public records, press accounts, and secondary sources; and contextual information in the collection materials. Omissions of ethnic and racial identities in finding aids created or updated after August 2017 are an indication of insufficient information to make an educated guess or an individual's preference for identity information to be excluded from description. When we have misidentified, please let us know at wilsonlibrary@unc.edu.

Guralnick has written fiction, short stories, screenplays, music criticism, nonfiction anthologies, and biographies, chiefly focusing on the musicians and music of the American South, including country, blues, gospel, soul, and rock 'n roll, from the 1950s and 1960s.
Peter Guralnick was born in Boston, Mass., and earned a B.A. (1960s) and M.A. in Creative Writing (1968) from Boston University. He began writing music reviews and articles for British blues magazines and Crawdaddy! beginning in 1965, for Boston area publications from 1967, and later for The Village Voice, Rolling Stone, Living Blues, and other publications. Research files and interviews collected by Peter Guralnick. Series 3.1 Elvis Presley Interviews and Research, 1956-1996, includes transcribed interviews and research materials collected by Peter Guralnick about Elvis Presley. Interviews conducted by Peter Guralnick and others include Scotty Moore, Sam Phillips, and Jerry Schilling. There is also a file of transcribed recordings of interviews, performances, press conferences, and other public appearances by Elvis Presley, originally dated 1956-1974, that have been collected by Guralnick. Research files also include photocopied correspondence, clippings, and printed materials collected by Guralnick, as well as research notes written by him and others. Copied materials are from the archives of Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc., from the personal papers of Presley's manager Colonel Tom Parker, and from the research files of Elvis Presley biographer Jerry Hopkins.
Series 3.2 General Subject Files, 1970-2007 (bulk 1995-2007), includes transcribed interviews by Guralnick with various authors and musicians, including Elvis Costello, Jerry Lee Lewis, Muddy Waters, Lee Smith, and Allen Toussaint. Interviews may be related to Guralnick's proposed "Creativity" anthology (see Series 2.2 Drafts).
Arrangement: Creator's original file order has been retained. Note that Guralnick's original folder titles follow the "Interviews" and "Research" designations assigned by the archivist.
Interview files include transcribed interviews conducted by Peter Guralnick and others about Elvis Presley, including Ernst Jorgensen and Jerry Hopkins, as well as other journalists and unnamed interviewers. Interviews by Guralnick are dated circa 1981-1996 (bulk 1988-1991). Interviews by others are dated 1950s-1996. There are a significant number of interviews with Scotty Moore, Sam Phillips, and Jerry Schilling. Also included is a file of transcribed recordings of interviews, performances, press conferences, and other public appearances by Elvis Presley, originally dated 1956-1974, collected by Guralnick. Transcribed interviews, phone conversations, and some transcribed dictations of notes by Peter Guralnick are also included.
Note that Peter Guralnick's original file order has been preserved: interviews are listed in loose alphabetical order by interviewee's last name. Files titled "Original interviews" appear to be duplicated throughout the series. Files titled "Elvis interviews" were conducted by Peter Guralnick and others including Jerry Hopkins and Ernst Jorgenson from 1990 to 1996.
Research files include photocopied correspondence, contracts, clippings, and printed materials collected by Peter Guralnick, as well as research notes written by him and others. Copied materials come from the papers of film producer Hal Wallis, from the archives of Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc., from the personal papers of Presley's manager Colonel Tom Parker, and from the research files of Elvis Presley biographer Jerry Hopkins, the author of Elvis: The Biography (2007). Materials from Colonel Tom Parker's papers primarily concern business activities, and include contracts and other materials relating to Parker and RCA Records. Jerry Hopkins materials relate to Elvis Presley's work in films, his wife Priscilla Presley, and his manager Colonel Tom Parker. Research files, 1971-1977, consist chiefly of clippings, press releases, and other printed material that appear to be from Jerry Hopkins' research files.
Arrangement: Creator's original file order has been retained. Note that Guralnick's original folder titles follow the "Interviews" designation assigned by the archivist.
