Journalist Thomas Goldsmith is the generations reporter for the NC Health News in Raleigh, N.C. Previous positions include Wake County editor for the Raleigh (N.C.) News and Observer and assistant managing editor for local news for the Nashville (Tenn.) Tennessean. Goldsmith edited the The Bluegrass Reader, which was published in 2004 by the University of Illinois Press. He is also a record producer, musician, singer, and songwriter.

The Addition of January 2018 contains audiovisual materials compiled by Thomas Goldsmith, including audio and video recordings of interviews, commercially produced live recordings, promotional releases, and television programs featuring prominent country, pop, and rock musicians. Audio recordings are on audiocassette, while video recordings are on VHS. The Addition also contains papers, including artist files, subject files, and working files related to the The Bluegrass Reader publication. Artist and subject files, much of which appears to date from Goldsmith's time at the Nashville Tennesseean, contain transcripts of interviews with musicians, reporter notebooks, publicity photographs, press clippings, and printed materials. The Bluegrass Reader materials consist of correspondence with authors and publishers, reprints and copies of articles about bluegrass music and musicians, and drafts of text written by Goldsmith for the publication.

Also includes a promotional copy of a Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Mark O'Connor release and a recording featuring the American actor, James "Jimmy" Stewart, as well as a one-page tape inventory created by Goldsmith. Recordings are on audiocassette.
