Abstract	Photographic materials, audio, video, posters, ephemera publications, memorabilia, and audiovisual materials created and collected by D. Kent Thompson, a white photographer, in the course of documenting the independent rock music scene in North Carolina in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s and the "Moral Monday" movement and other grassroots protests and marches centered in Raleigh, N.C., beginning in 2013. Moral Mondays protests began in North Carolina in spring 2013 in response to actions by the Republican-led state government. Later protests focused on the Poor People's Campaign, gun violence, women's rights, transgender rights, and immigration policies separating children from their families. The International Bluegrass Music Association is also documented.

D. Kent Thompson moved from New York state to North Carolina with his family when he was a teenager. He attended Randolph Community College in Asheboro, N.C. In the 1980s, he befriended members of Southern Culture on the Skids (S.C.O.T.S) and became a member of their punk noise band, Toxic Pig Fuck. Since 1992, Thompson has been a photographer for the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources at the North Carolina Museum of History.

The D. Kent Thompson Collection documents the independent rock music scene in North Carolina in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, and the "Moral Monday" movement and other grassroots protests and marches centered in Raleigh, N.C., beginning in 2013. Music-related materials include black-and-white and color photographic negatives and prints of various formats taken by white photographer D. Kent Thompson of musicians, concerts, and other events; publications that reprinted his photographs; music ephemera and memorabilia that he created or collected; his camera bag; and audiovisual materials he compiled. Artists represented include Southern Culture on the Skids and others. Protest-related materials include posters collected and digital images taken by D. Kent Thompson at "Moral Monday" events organized in response to actions of the North Carolina State General Assembly after the Republican Party gained control of all branches of North Carolina Government in 2013, the first time since Reconstruction. The "Moral Monday" movement was founded and led by William J. Barber, II, an African American pastor at Greenleaf Christian Church in Goldsboro, N.C. and community activist who was elected president of the North Carolina chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 2006.

Additions to the collection chiefly document later protests and marches, including local manifestations of national events, such as the Women's March on Washington in January 2017, March for Our Lives in March 2018, and Keep Families Together in June 2018. Topics include the Poor People's Campaign, gun violence, women's rights, transgender rights, immigration policies separating children from their families, climate change, and impeachment of President Trump. The International Bluegrass Music Association is also documented.
