Now I do my talking right aside the road. I never have no regular services. I made that place to talk from, that pulpit-looking thing, out of this old bicycle cart. I got this Pepsi cooler chained to the top, and I just put the other stuff, the rags, rubber, the bucket, and chains, and the bottle, and the drain pipe. The bottle is for antifreeze. The rags come from clothes. I used to carry on the bicycle to the wash. The bucket is to put my different instruments in. Wheels come off a farm machine, something like a stump-cutter machine, which rolls easy, designed to carry seven hundred pounds. Over in the bushes there, that's the old altar thing put out here first. It's a big hay-rack wheels turned up, which I fixed the other stuff to. It got gasoline cans, some iron rods, a truck rim, and a hubcap, and a reflector light, and some other stuff. Now back in there I got a special place fixed up with these chairs and that red stool. I picked up that stool off an old junkyard; had it in here for about thirty years, maybe longer. That thing standing next to the chair come from the same junkyard. The rod come from a shopping cart, the bucket, is my own old bucket. That piece of iron on the tree is off a hay-rack seat. I found me that half part of some ice tongs and painted it white and screwed it in. The chain connects that to the stool." |

There is a very old sycamore. I was here forty years and the tree was the same size back when I come. I got this motorcycle tire up on that tree. And this old rug for riding horses. A man put it on the old horse's back to keep it from getting saddle scratches. The old cook pot be hanging beside it. I got some equipment in there, the water jug, a piece of dog leash, some broken stuff, and that bone, it come from a thing like an alligator, no not alligator, well we call it a "cooter" You call it I think a turtle. On the other side is this old junk-can, put over this rotten stump that grew out of the sycamore but is hardly surviving. I put this bottle, motor-oil bottle, and one of my rubber collars, in the can. All of this is something I have put up for the old tree. The younger sycamore tree next to it was planted two days after John Kennedy got assassinated. Me and another man planted it, honoring Kennedy. It growed that big in them many years." |

Imagebox 01, C35slide 20491/001926 images Color 35mm Slide Original numbering on slide: ASD-25; ASD-26; ASDX-54; Notes from Davis (From: Souls Grown Deep: African American Vernacular Art of the South, Volume 2): "I put this place as a place people can come and sit if they want to.
