Abstract | The Charles G. Zug III Collection consists of interviews, field notes, and other papers compiled by white folklorist and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill professor, Charles G. Zug III. The majority of the collection is made up of audio interviews conducted primarily by Zug with North Carolina-based folk artists, including boatbuilders, chair-makers, painters, potters, sculptors, ship model builders, and weavers, from the counties of Burke, Carteret, Catawba, Davidson, Lincoln, and Surry. Notable interviewees include sculptor, Raymond Coins; potter, Burlon Craig; and painter, Minnie Reinhardt. The collection also contains field notes, or transcripts, created by Zug that correspond to the interviews found in the collection, as well as other papers compiled by Zug, including applications for the North Carolina Folk Heritage Award and printed materials featuring published works by Zug on the folk art and self-taught artists of North Carolina. |

The majority of the collection is made up of audio interviews conducted primarily by Zug with North Carolina-based folk artists, including chair-maker, Aaron Buff, of Burke County; sculptor, Raymond Coins, of Surry County; potter, Burlon Craig, of Lincoln County; boatbuilders or ship model builders, Julian Guthrie, Joe Fulcher, Steve Lewis, Ed O'Neal, and James Rose, of Carteret County; weaver, Sally Parnell, of Davidson County; and painter, Minnie Reinhardt, of Catawba County. The collection also includes an interview with Burlon Craig (FT-20514/1, FT-20514/2, FS-20514/17) conducted by filmmaker, Tom Davenport, as well as field notes, or transcripts, created by Zug that correspond to the interviews found in the collection. Recordings are on audiocassette and open reel audio. Transcripts include notes, timecode, and select quotations.
The collection also contains other papers compiled by Charles G. Zug III, including applications for the North Carolina Folk Heritage Award and printed materials featuring published works by Zug on the folk art and self-taught artists of North Carolina.
