Abstract | The Sing Out! Collection documents the organization's administrative functions and the publication of its magazine about traditional and contemporary folk music. The photographic materials consist of images depicting folk musicians, groups, and related subjects, chiefly in the United States. There are also administrative records documenting licenses, financials, permissions, promotions, fundraising, human resources, the advisory board, book proposals, and the North American Folk Music and Dance Alliance. Of particular note are extensive collections of folk-related newsletters and serials, folk festival programs, and artist subject files. Also included are some pre-publication materials for Sing Out! titles; a small group of promotional materials, songs, and songbooks of music therapist, teacher, and folksinger, Jean Murai; and audio and video recordings of traditional and contemporary folk music compiled by Sing Out! staff. |

Sing Out! is a non-profit educational organization based in Bethlehem, Pa. Their quarterly journal of folk music and folk songs, Sing Out! Magazine, was published from May 1950 through spring of 2014.
Back to TopThe Sing Out! Collection documents the organization's administrative functions and the publication of its magazine about traditional and contemporary folk music. The photographic materials, which were collected and created for publication in Sing Out!, 1960-2010, consist of images depicting folk musicians, groups, and related subjects, chiefly in the United States. Folk was interpreted broadly by Sing Out! and images depict musicians and groups associated with traditional folk, contemporary folk, and international styles of music. Many of the images in the collection were obtained by Sing Out! from archival sources for use in publication. There is a small amount of pre-publication materials including page proofs, promotional pamphlets, examples of cover art, and other materials used in publication of Sing Out!, Where Have All the Flowers Gone?, and Carry It On. The administrative records include print licenses, sales results, mechanical licenses, song permissions, song submissions, and other materials documenting promotions, fundraising, human resources, the advisory board, book proposals, and the North American Folk Music and Dance Alliance. Of particular note are extensive collections of folk-related newsletters and serials, folk festival programs, and artist subject files. Also included is a small group of promotional materials, songs, and songbooks of music therapist, teacher, and folksinger, Jean Murai, as well as audio and video recordings of traditional and contemporary folk music compiled by Sing Out! staff. Audiovisual materials include live recordings of folk festivals, concerts, and Sing Out! sponsored events; audio compilations and dubs created by Sing Out! staff; and video copies of the television programs, Horses Sing None of It! and Rainbow Quest.
