The program culminated in a convocation in February 1979. Later a centennial alumni directory and a history of the School of Medicine were published. Records include correspondence and other files pertaining to the work of the committee in planning the School of Medicine's centennial observance. On 14 April 1976, Christopher C. Fordham, Dean of the School of Medicine, appointed a committee to plan appropriate observances to mark the 1979 centennial of the beginning of medical education in Chapel Hill. The Centennial Committee was chaired by Dr. William McLendon and included faculty, staff, alumni, and students. For two years following its organizational meeting in June 1976, it worked to produce a program that included a year-long series of lectures on the history of medical education, the issuance of a centennial coin, the observance of North Carolina Memorial Hospital's silver anniversary, the appointment of Alumni Distinguished Professors, and the selection of distinguished service award recipients. The program culminated in a university-wide convocation in February 1979. Also in 1979, a two-volume history of the School of Medicine was published under the title Medical Education at Chapel Hill. It included The First Hundred Years and the Centennial Alumni Directory. In addition, many of the centennial lectures were published in the North Carolina Medical Journal.
