Size 19.5 feet of linear shelf space (approximately 13000 items)
Abstract The Vice Chancellor for University Advancement has administrative responsibility for the university's Division of University Advancement, which includes the offices responsible for the University's private fundraising and for the management of its relations with its various external constituencies. The university's unified development program began in 1952 and was reorganized in 1973 as the Division of Development and Public Service. In 1980, its name changed to Division of University Relations, and, in 1985, it became the Division of Development and University Relations. In 1995, the position of Vice Chancellor for Development and University Relations was eliminated by incoming Chancellor Michael Hooker, but it was reestablished in 1996 as Vice Chancellor for University Advancement. Records include correspondence and other files relating to the administration of and activities of the Division of University Advancement and its constituent units. Included are files related to units that formerly were part of the division: the General Alumni Association, the Division of Extension and Continuing Education, the Morehead Planetarium, and WUNC-TV. Also included are files related to News Services and WUNC-FM, which, as of 2012, are still part of the division. The Addition of September 2010 consists of files related to the fund-raising campaign that was launched during the university's bicentennial celebration, which began in 1989.

expand/collapse Expand/collapse Historical Information

The Division of Development and University Relations was established as the Division of Development and Public Service on March 26, 1973. Its creation was intended to improve the University's fund raising efforts and to increase campus services to the general public. Initially the vice chancellor for development and public service supervised the operations of the Office of Developmental Affairs (including the offices of the General Alumni Association and Alumni Annual Giving), the News Bureau, WUNC-TV (Chapel Hill studio), and the Office of Research Administration.

Over the years, however, numerous administrative changes occurred. Effective 1 July 1973, the Morehead Planetarium moved administratively from the Division of Business and Finance to the Division of Development and Public Service. WUNC-FM, previously part of the Department of Radio, Television, and Motion Pictures, joined the division in 1975. On 14 April 1976, the Division of Extension and Continuing Education also became part of the Division of Development and Public Service. The Office of Research Administration was transferred to the supervision of the Graduate School on 1 July 1978; and during August of that year, the University Photographic Laboratory was added to the Division of Development and Public Service. In 1980 the Photographic Laboratory was shifted to the Media Center in the Division of Academic Affairs. On 1 July 1980, the University Gazette became part of the Division of Development and Public Service. And on 3 October 1980, WUNC-TV was shifted to the new UNC Center for Public Television, which was responsible to General Administration of the University of North Carolina System.

On 1 September 1980, the name of the division was changed to Division of University Relations. In 1981 the position of director of public information was created within the division; the new position oversaw the work of the News Bureau and the University Gazette. Early in 1985 a restructuring of the division took place. The Division of Extension and Continuing Education and the Morehead Planetarium were transferred to the supervision of the provost. The Records Publications Office, which produced the course catalogs, was added to the responsibilities of the director of public information. With the appointment of Gary A. Evans as vice chancellor on 1 September 1985, the name of the division was changed to Division of Development and University Relations.

After becoming chancellor on 1 July 1995, Michael Hooker eliminated the vice chancellorship for development and university relations effective 31 July 1995, because he wanted direct oversight of the university's development and public relations activities. However, in April 1996, he re-established the position of vice chancellor and changed the name of the division to Division of University Advancement. Matthew G. Kupec, who had been associate vice chancellor for development, then became vice chancellor for university advancement.

Heads of the division have been:

26 March 1973-30 July 1978 William F. Little, Vice Chancellor for Development and Public Service
1 August 1978-31 August 1980 Rollie Tillman, Jr., Vice Chancellor for Development and Public Service
1 September 1980-31 December 1984 Rollie Tillman, Jr., Vice Chancellor for University Relations
1 September 1985-31 August 1990 Gary A. Evans, Vice Chancellor for Development and University Relations
15 September 1991-31 July 1995 Arch T. Allen III, Vice Chancellor for Development and University Relations
1996- Matthew G. Kupec, Vice Chancellor for University Advancement
