Abstract | In 1969, the Class of 1938 announced its intent to give $250,000 to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to build an international student center. By 1975, however, only $60,000 had been pledged. The class gift committee then agreed to create an endowment to fund study abroad for UNC-Chapel Hill students and to assist foreign students enrolled at the university. The records of the Class of 1938 include files on class history, reunions, the class's campaign to fund a gift to the university, and the endowed fellowship that it created. |

In 1969, the Class of 1938 announced its intent to give $250,000 to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to build an International Center, where, in the words of class historian Dr. Joseph F. Patterson, "Americans and foreign students could live together, each benefiting from the other's problems and cultures, with resultant broadened horizons and mutual understandings." By 1975, however, only $60,000 had been pledged, and the university had decided that it did not need additional student housing nor could it afford to maintain a large, freestanding international student center. The class gift committee then agreed to create an endowment to fund study abroad for UNC-Chapel Hill students and to assist foreign students enrolled at the university. Class members, who lived through and lost friends in World War II, created the endowment to help foster international understanding and promote world peace. By 2013, the endowment created in 1975 had funded 171 students for independent projects abroad. As of 2013, the Class of 1938's endowment program operated through the university's International Student and Scholar Services.
Back to TopThe records of the Class of 1938 include files on class history, reunions, and the class's campaign to fund a gift to the university. There are also files on the history and operation of its endowment program.
Note that the original order and file titles assigned by class historian Dr. Joseph F. Patterson have been maintained.
