The Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies Foundation, Inc., was established on 8 July 1974, as a non-profit corporation. Its object was to preserve, maintain, restore, and enhance those literary, historical, and artistic properties that are entrusted to it by the Dialectic Society and the Philanthropic Society of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The foundation operates as the legal arm of the societies, holding title to the portrait collection, chamber furnishings, and other items of value. The foundation uses its financial resources, both solicited and donated, to fund portrait restoration, an ongoing archive preservation project; plot maintenance in the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery; and other large capital expenditures.

The correspondence includes written and typed notes on Society and Foundation history. Also includes grant applications related to portrait conservation and the microfilming of Society records. Images of portraits include slides, transparencies, negatives, positives, and photographic print and paper print copies.
