The Dental Research Center was responsible for managing the research activities of the School of Dentistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Its establishment was funded by a National Institutes of Health grant, with matching funds coming from donations collected by the North Carolina Dental Society and a contribution from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The center was dedicated on 15 October 1967. At the time of the center's construction, the School of Dentistry was named one of five regional research institutes in dental health research and remained a leader in the field throughout its history. In its first ten years, researchers at the center published 257 articles and 57 chapters in books. Staff at the center were also involved in the School of Dentistry's educational program, offering elective courses to students. In 2006, the School of Dentistry ranked third highest in the nation in National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research funding. By 2012, the Dental Research Center had been divided into three research entities: the North Carolina Oral Health Institute, the Center for Neurosensory Disorders, and the General and Oral Health Center.
