Abstract | Medical Illustration and Photography was a unit of the School of Medicine of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It provided art and photographic services to faculty and staff of the School of Medicine, North Carolina Memorial Hospital, and other university departments. It began in January 1953 with a single photographer and continued providing services until 2007, when the School of Medicine closed it. Records consist largely of black-and-white photographic negatives and prints created by Medical Illustration and Photography from 1953 to 2007. Images depict faculty, staff, students, and facilities of the School of Medicine and other university departments. Included are individual and composite portraits along with images of physicians and staff engaged in their work. Also included are some correspondence and other files related to the administation and operation of Medical Illustration and Photography; 20 films, mostly of medical procedures; and five audiotapes. Due to the medical nature of the collection, there are graphic images in this collection depicting surgeries, injuries, recovery progress, and deceased individuals. The Addition of December 2010 consists of approximately 1150 digital images, mostly of campus buildings and landmarks. Included are many aerial images made in 2007 and 2009 depicting all parts of the campus. Also included are digital copies of historic photographs related to the School of Medicine. |

In January 1953, a single photographer, provided by the university's Communication Center, began providing photographic services to the School of Medicine and North Carolina Memorial Hospital in what was then called the Medical Illustration Laboratory. In July 1954, the photographer, Wallace Patterson, was put on the payroll of the School of Medicine; and in October 1954, the school hired Marion Seiler to do medical art work. Neither Patterson nor Seiler had previous experience with medical subjects. Departments paid fees for the services of the laboratory. The Communication Center continued to provide supplies and equipment and to receive funds generated by the Medical Illustration Laboratory until fall 1955, when this arrangement ended. A School of Medicine trust fund account was then set up to receive funds generated by the laboratory and to cover the expenses of its operation. The School of Medicine's Committee on Medical Illustration oversaw that operation. In 1958, Alfred C. Webster became the first Director of Medical Illustration. He served in that position until September 1973. Succeeding Webster as director were Charles L. Wright (1973-1993), A. Steve Williams (1993-1997), and Douglas M. Mokaren (acting director, 1997-1999; director, 1999-2007).
Over its lifetime, Medical Illustration and Photography increased its staff and expanded services to include graphic design, motion picture film and video production, and multimedia. In 1985, it introduced computer graphics. It also provided educational support for classrooms and online instruction. It became a Kodak Q-Lab for Ektachrome film processing. Its services were available not only to faculty and staff of the School of Medicine and North Carolina Memorial Hospital but to the entire Division of Health Affairs and to other university departments. The School of Medicine decided to make Medical Illustration and Photography a full-cost recovery operation beginning in 2003-2004. Early in 2007, the school announced that Medical Illustration and Photography would cease operation on 1 May 2007.
