H. (Herbert) Holden Thorp was born in Fayetteville, N.C., in 1964. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1986 with a B.S. in chemistry. He earned a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in 1989 and completed post-doctoral work at Yale in 1990. Thorp began his professional academic career in 1991 as an associate professor of chemistry at North Carolina State University. He returned to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1993, where he quickly progressed from visiting assistant professor to tenured professor. Beginning in 2001, Thorp took on administrative roles at the University in addition to teaching and research. His first administrative assignment was director of the Morehead Planetarium. In 2005, he was named a Kenan professor and chair of the Chemistry Department. In 2007, he was selected from a national pool to be the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and in 2008 he was named chancellor of the University. Thorp served in this position from 1 July 2008 until 30 June 2013.
