The School of Dentistry of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was established by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1949, and the first classes were admitted in the fall of 1950. As of 2012, the school offered a full array of degree programs in the fields of dentistry and oral medicine, including nine master of science degree programs, two Ph.D. programs, several certificate programs, and the Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree. The school was renamed the Claude A. Adams Jr. and Grace Phillips Adams School of Dentistry in February 2019.
