expand/collapse Expand/collapse Historical Information

Greek life at the university has been overseen formally and informally by various university offices since the early twentieth century. Before the position of Dean of Students was created in 1919, the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts acted as liaison to student organizations, including the eleven fraternities. Around 1900, the faculty Committee on Fraternities was established. However, the disciplining of fraternities at that time was handled by the Student Council and the Panhellenic Council. After 1919, oversight of fraternities was gradually consolidated within the Office of the Dean of Students. The university's first two sororities were chartered in 1923, but it was not until 1939 that a third was established. Oversight of the sororities became the responsibility of the Adviser to Women, whose title changed to Dean of Women in 1942. The position of Dean of Men was also created at that time. The Dean of Men (specifically through the assistant to the dean of men, 1964-1969, and the assistant dean of men, 1970-1972) was responsible for fraternities and the Dean of Women for sororities. Both deans reported to the Dean of Students, who was also Chairman of the Division of Student Welfare, established in 1933. The Division of Student Welfare was replaced by the Division of Student Affairs in 1954. The faculty Committee on Fraternities was renamed Committee on Fraternities and Sororities and continued until 1971.

In 1972, the offices of the Dean of Men and Dean of Women were replaced by a consolidated Department of Student Life headed by the Associate Dean for Student Life. From 1972 to the mid-1980s, a series of assistant deans within the Department of Student Life handled most fraternity and sorority matters. During that time, the department's name changed from Student Life to Student Development and back to Student Life before it was replaced by a reorganized Office of the Dean of Students. The Office of Greek Affairs was created in 1994 on the recommendation of the Chancellor's Committee on Greek Affairs. Around 2005, its name changed to Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life; and in 2011, it changed to Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and Community Involvement. The office establishes and maintains policies on the colonization of fraternity and sorority chapters at the university; recruitment of members; academic standards; condition of chapter houses; sanctions for misconduct; and other matters. It also facilitates the involvement of fraternities and sororities in community service.

Some information in this note is from Peter W. Hall's "The Fraternity Adviser at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1964 to 1974" (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Master's Thesis, 1975).
