In 1997, inspired by Pennsylvania State University’s 46-hour dance marathon, Michael Bucy, an University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student from Raleigh, decided to start a student-led fundraiser. In February 1999, 75 dancers participated in the first UNC-Chapel Hill Dance Marathon, raising $40,000 for the N.C. Children’s Hospital. In 2000, the UNC-Chapel Hill Dance Marathon created the For the Kids Fund, which provides financial assistance to parents of children with needs not covered by their medical insurance. Between 1999 and 2018, the UNC-Chapel hill Dance Marathon raised more than 5.1 million dollars and grew from 75 participants to about 2,000 students participating each year.
