Abstract | The Gamma Lambda Chapter of the Phi Mu Fraternity was colonized at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1964. Founded in 1852 at Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga., Phi Mu is the second oldest female fraternal organization established in the United States. Records chiefly consist of administrative documents, national and chapter publications, meeting minutes, photographs, and architectural plans for the chapter house on Henderson Street. Administrative documents concern the purchase of the Henderson Street property in 1965. Publications consist of volumes and clippings from The Aglaia of Phi Mu and The Gamma Lambda Triangle. Records also include a bound scrapbook titled "Phi Mu Pledges '64-'65," containing clippings, invitations, pamphlets, certificates, and black-and-white and color photographs of initiation, rush, the pledge class, and various parties and events; loose photographs depicting the ground breaking ceremony and construction of the Henderson Street house; and eleven architectural drawings of the Henderson Street plot and house. Fiftieth anniversary celebration materials consist of Microsoft Word, PDF, JPEG, and MOV files from the Gamma Lambda Chapter of Phi Mu Fraternity's 50th anniversary celebration in November 2014. Includes planning materials and schedules, photographs, a speech from former Phi Mu national president Adele Williamson (national president when the Gamma Lambda chapter was founded), remarks from the 50th anniversary "Welcome Tea," a schedule and invitation for the weekend's events, promotional materials, a map used in the chapter's Our Journey Home walking tour of sites related to their history, a proclamation by Chapel Hill, N.C., mayor Mark Kleinschmidt that 14 November 2014 be Phi Mu Gamma Lambda Chapter Day, and other materials related to the event. |
