The Carolina Center for Public Service was established in 1999 to develop and coordinate partnerships between UNC-Chapel Hill and communities throughout North Carolina. The Center manages several programs, including APPLES Service-Learning (which became a part of the Center in 2009), Buckley Public Service Scholars, and Thorp Faculty Engaged Scholars. The Center also presents awards and fellowships to UNC community members and departments for exemplary community service and engaged scholarship.
From 1997 through 2008, the Center managed the Tar Heel Bus Tour, a weeklong program designed to introduce new faculty, staff, and administrators to North Carolina by travelling around the state and visiting businesses, historic and cultural sites, and UNC faculty and students working in the community.

The Tar Heel Bus Tour was established in 1997 in order to provide an orientation to North Carolina for faculty, staff, and administrators who had recently come to UNC from out of state. The Bus Tour was initially supported by Chancellor Michael Hooker. The week-long tour gave attendees an opportunity to see and learn about many aspects of North Carolina history and culture and to gain a better understand of UNC's work throughout the state. Sample stops along the tour included tobacco farms, the Blue Ridge Parkway, a NASCAR track, furniture and textile factories, Bank of America, regional health initiatives, military bases, and local schools. The bus tour was discontinued after 2008 due to budget cuts.
These records include early planning documents and proposals, summaries of evaluations from several tours, and the "Field Guide to North Carolina," a packet prepared for each tour containing the itinerary, names and biographies of all of the attendees, and statistical and summary information about North Carolina.
