The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was established in 2006 but had its origins in the work of a fall 2000 committee appointed by Provost Robert Shelton to review the campus climate in relation to sexual orientation and gender identity. The committee report made several recommendations, one of which was the creation of an Office of LGBTQ Life and Study to provide a focal point for consolidating, publicizing, and integrating social support and academic resources available to the LGBTQ community. The UNC-Chapel Hill LGBTQ Center thus began in the spring of 2003 as the LGBTQ Office in the Office of the Dean of Students.
In July 2006, Provost Shelton and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Peggy Jablonski created two full-time positions (director and assistant director) to lead an administratively separate LGBTQ Center tasked with providing programs, services, and resources to create a welcoming environment for all members of the UNC-Chapel Hill community. The Center remains a partner to the Office of the Dean of Students but reports directly to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
Terri Phoenix has served as the director since 2007.
