Richard R. Cole was the dean of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Media and Journalism from 1979-2005. Cole received a bachelor’s degree in journalism as well as a master’s in mass communication from the University of Texas at Austin in 1964 and 1966, respectively. He received a PhD in mass communication from the University of Minnesota in 1971. Cole joined the UNC community in 1971 as Assistant Professor of Journalism and spent his career at the University.
Over the course of his 26-year tenure, Cole helped build new programs in sports communication, business journalism, medical journalism, and new media. Under his leadership, the school often ranked as one of the top five journalism schools in the country. The school also gained international prestige from its exchanges with peers in Mexico, Cuba, Russia, Eastern Europe, and Africa. Cole has received numerous honors, including the Freedom Forum Medal for Distinguished Accomplishments in Journalism-Mass Communication Administration in 1992. The school has also named an eminent professorship, a research assistantship, and a high school scholarship after him. He currently runs the school’s Visiting International Scholars Program as the Dean Emeritus.
Back to TopSpeeches, correspondence, and teaching materials of Richard R. Cole of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The collection contains speeches given from 1988 until 2016, files about projects in Russia, Mexico, and Cuba, and photographs. Many of the speeches were given to alumni and detail developments in the School of Media and Journalism. Other speeches were delivered at conferences in Mexico and Cuba and memorial services for various colleagues. There are files from Richard R. Cole’s retirement celebration on 29 April 2005 as well as a photograph album from the event. The collection also contains an album of the Cuban professors who visited UNC-Chapel Hill in Fall 1994 and Spring 1995 and photographs of Cole’s trips to Cuba from 1991 to 2016.
