John Kasarda is the Director for the Center for Air Commerce at the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the CEO of the airport consulting firm Aerotropolis Business Concepts, and president of the Aerotropolis Institute in China. He is best known for developing the concept of the aerotropolis, a model which emphasizes the role of airports and aviation as catalysts for economic growth.
Kasarda was chair of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Department of Sociology from 1980 to 1990. He then moved to UNC-Chapel Hill's Kenan-Flagler Business School as Kenan Distinguished Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship and Director of the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise. During his tenure there Kasarda helped establish the Kenan Institute Asia in Bangkok.
