The collection contains material related to Henry Volkening's article "Thomas Wolfe: Penance No More," published in 1939 in The Virginia Quarterly Review. Included is an early draft of the article, annotated typescript transcriptions of letters from Thomas Wolfe to Henry Volkening that apparently served as research materials for the article, and letters from Maxwell Perkins to Henry Volkening about the article. Also included are three photographs: one of Thomas and Fred Wolfe, dated 1 August 1937; one of Thomas Wolfe's gravestone; and one of Julia E. Wolfe and three unidentified women around W.O.
