Abstract | This collection contains comic books and other graphic material produced in Mexico by Mexican writers and artists between 1972 and 2017, with the bulk of the materials dating between 2010 and 2019. The collection gives a broad picture of current comic books and graphic novels in Mexico. Story lines are varied and include romance, detective fiction, horror, myths and legends, science fiction, and fantasy. These comics deal with daily life or social movements. Protagonists may be pre-Hispanic or historical characters with superhero traits. Characters may be human, animals or objects with human characteristics, robots, ghosts, etc. Graphic art styles are varied and include the manga and monero traditions and in some cases integrate indigenous elements. The collections include mainstream comics, self-published zines, graphic novels, graphic posters, promotional materials, ephemera, and more. |

A number of the items are part of small runs and some contain author autographs. The materials are arranged alphabetically by title. Additional titles, 1972-2019, have been added to Series 1 in October 2016, August 2017, June 2018, July 2018, November 2018, and March 2021.
Series 2 spans from 2010 to 2015 and includes materials that relate to the study of the history and the art of comic books and graphic novels. It includes fanzines, monographs on the history of Mexican comics, trading cards, and art books. The materials are arranged alphabetically by title.

This series is comprised of items that came in together in October 2016. The dates range from 2000-2016; some materials are undated. The pieces in subseries 1 (Comic Books and Graphic Novels) are new titles in the collection. Subseries 2 contains items that are part of series held in the original collection material (Series 1). A large number of the items in this addition contain author inscriptions directed specifically at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, collected by the vendor at La Mole Comic Con and other similar events.
