This collection previously was unit 6 within the North Carolina Miscellaneous Papers (#1135-z). In April 2020, all nine units of North Carolina Miscellaneous Papers were separated into individual collections with revised description. North Carolina Miscellaneous Papers (#1135-z) originally was processed with support from the Randleigh Foundation Trust.

John L. Leary (1818-1845) was a white resident of Chowan County, N.C.

W. J. Leary, a white medical doctor, was a surgeon in the First Battalion, Infantry, North Carolina State Guard, in 1879.

Papers include an invitation to the funeral of John L. Leary (1818-1845), a white resident of Chowan County, N.C., 7 March 1845; a notice of tax assessment, 18-19 July 1865, Chowan County, N.C., W. E. Bond, Assistant Assessor; and a commission, 25 February 1879, of W. J. Leary, a white medical doctor, as surgeon in the First Battalion, Infantry, North Carolina State Guard.
