Encoded by: Dawne Lucas, June 2024

Since August 2017, we have added ethnic and racial identities for individuals and families represented in collections. To determine identity, we rely on self-identification; other information supplied to the repository by collection creators or sources; public records, press accounts, and secondary sources; and contextual information in the collection materials. Omissions of ethnic and racial identities in finding aids created or updated after August 2017 are an indication of insufficient information to make an educated guess or an individual's preference for identity information to be excluded from description. When we have misidentified, please let us know at wilsonlibrary@unc.edu.

expand/collapse Expand/collapse Biographical Information

Charles M. Weiss was born on 7 December 1918 and grew up in Newark, N.J. After earning an undergraduate degree in bacteriology and limnology (the study of inland waters) from Rutgers University, he worked for Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on a U.S. Navy contract to study ways to prevent barnacles from growing on naval ships' hulls (to improve their speed during World War II). After the war, he earned a doctorate in sanitary engineering from Johns Hopkins University. In 1956, he joined the faculty of the Universty of North Carolina's Department of Sanitary Engineering, where he taught until 1989. His research at UNC included developing techniques for detecting pesticides in water and working on the development of several local reservoirs and water supplies, including Jordan Lake and University Lake. His academic work led him to travel to numerous countries around the world, where he was able to explore his other passion: photography. Charles Weiss died in 2018, one week after his 100th birthday.

Shirley Friedlander Weiss was born 26 February 1921, the second daughter of Max and Vera Friedlander, in New York City, N.Y. Shirley Weiss received a Bachelor's degree in economics from the New Jersey College for Women at Rutgers University in 1942, a Master of Regional Planning degree from the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of North Carolina in 1958, and a Ph.D. in economics from Duke University in 1973. Shortly after receiving her doctorate degree, Weiss became the first female faculty member of UNC's Department of City and Regional Planning, where her tenure as a professor lasted 35 years. Shirley Weiss died in 2010.

Charles and Shirley Weiss married in 1942 and were married for 68 years. They collaborated frequently on academic pursuits and enjoyed documenting their professional and personal travels through photography and travel journaling. Together they traveled to six of the seven continents of the world.
