expand/collapse Expand/collapse Historical Information

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was founded in 1793. In the late 1980's the University designated a seven month period during which the bicentennial of the founding of the University would be officially observed: from October 10, 1993 through May 15, 1994 (commencement). The images in this collection document the activities that occurred during October 10-12, 1993, which was designated as the official begining of the Bicentennial Observance at the University. The schedule of events for October 10-12, 1993 is available as a pdf file (3 pages, approximately 106 KB) and lists corresponding roll numbers listed in instances where they have been identified. The two chief photographers represented in this collection are Dan Sears and Rick Beckman. Sears has served as the official University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill photographer since 1992. He has also worked for several newspapers, United Press International, and the Associated Press. Beckman began his career as a photojournalist and taught for 30 years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
