Abstract | The collection of two white anthropology graduate students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Hester Davis (1930-2014) and John L. Grant, consists of photographic materials relating to their 1957 master’s theses. The collection contains black-and-white negatives, black-and-white photographic prints, color slides and black-and-white glass slides. The images depict the community and social aspect of Qualla Boundary, home of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation in Western North Carolina. |

Hester Davis and John Grant were anthropology graduate students at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, when the images in this collection were taken between 1955-1956. Davis and Grant went with a group of anthropology graduate students to do field work observing the Cherokee community in Qualla Boundary, home of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation in western North Carolina. They used their findings (including images in this collection) to write their masters theses, which were both published in 1957.

Davis and Grant were part of a team made up of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Haveford University (Haverford, PA) Anthropology Graduate Students who did field work among the Cherokee communities in the Qualla Boundary area in western North Carolina. The images document the domestic and religious life of adults and children as well as leisure activities in the Big Cove Community. Also included are views of homes, churches, schools, and farm buildings in the community. The collection includes 2x2 in. black-and-white negatives, 3x4 in. black and white glass slides, 5x7 in. black-and-white photographic prints, 35mm color slides, and copies of three theses that were written using the data collected while this field work in the Qualla Boundary was being done. The theses include multiple images from this collection.

Davis and Grant were part of a team made up of University of North Carolina and Haveford University Anthropology Graduate Students who did field work among the Cherokee communities in the Qualla Boundary area in western North Carolina. Series 1 is divided into four subseries. The first subseries contains 2x2 in. black-and-white negatives, the second subseries contains 3x4 in. black-and-white glass slides, the third subseries includes 5x7 in. black-and-white photographic prints, and the forth subseries includes 35mm color slides.

The materials in this subseries are images taken while Davis and Grant were conducting field work in the Qualla Boundary are of western North Carolina in 1955-1956. A majority of the negatives are accompanied by a contact print. Note that the descriptions accompanying materials in this subseries were provided by the creators.
