Abstract Collection contains black and white photographic prints given to white historian, Elmer D. Johnson by a student leaving the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to serve in World War II. Johnson was a student at the University of North Carolina at different times between 1936 and 1951. The images were compiled in a small leather album and depict the UNC campus between 1940and 1942. Included are images depicting interior and exterior views of the Louis Round Wilson Library; the Morehead-Patterson Memorial Bell Tower; South Building; Emerson Playing Field; and student, Paul Hayes, in a dorm room of Pettigrew Hall.

The photographic album in this collection is fragile due to its age and the materials used in the album. There are no original negatives for any of the images in the Johnson Collection. Researchers may be presented with a digital copy instead of original materials if the Photographic Archivist has determined an original should not be handled.

Acquisitions Information
The photographs were a gift in 1990 from Elmer Douglas Johnson, an alumnus of the University of North Carolina. He received the photographs from an unidentified fellow student who was leaving UNC in 1942 to serve in World War II. (Accession no. 30423.)

Collection contains 27 black-and-white photographic prints depicting buildings and grounds at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., during the early 1940s. Fifteen of the images are contained in a small leather covered album; the other 12 are stored in polyethylene sheets.There are a few individuals included in the images, but only one is identified. Included are images of the Louis Round Wilson Library (exterior and interior), the Morehead-Patterson Memorial Bell Tower, South Building, Emerson Playing Field, and student Paul Hayes Etheridge Jr. in his dorm room in Pettigrew Hall.
