William Franklin Clodfelter was born in Asheville, N.C., on 20 June 1911, the son of James F. Clodfelter, a Southern Railway employee. After finishing high school, he attended Asheville-Biltmore College (now the University of North Carolina at Asheville) in 1931-1932 and later graduated from Jones Business College in Orlando, Fla.
Frank Clodfelter started work for the Southern Railway in 1931 and, during his career, held a variety of posts including that of locomotive engineer. Photography was one of Clodfelter's interests, and he won several awards for his work. He served as chief photographer for The Asheville Citizen for three years. Clodfelter wrote several articles in newspapers and magazines, and he authored the text for Fogg and Steam: A Regional Look at Steam in North America, published in 1978 by the Pruett Publishing Company, Boulder, Colo. He was also an outdoors enthusiast and conservationist. Frank Clodfelter died on 29 June 1984.

Blue Ridge Mountains on the Old Fort to Ridgecrest line of the Southern Railway System, 14 October 1981.These photographs made at the same location represent, in Frank Clodfelter's opinion, the most spectacular view of the Blue Ridge Mountains on the Old Fort to Ridgecrest line of the Southern Railway System. The photograph shows the range of the Pisgah National Forest in the background. This photograph was made on the vast horseshoe curve around Andrews Geyser between mileposts 116 and 117 on the Salisbury to Asheville line. One photograph shows a Spencer to Asheville freight train climbing the Blue Ridge Mountains. Another phototograph shows the caboose of an Asheville to Spencer freight train. These photographs were made 14 October 1981. |
