William W. (Bill) Prouty was born in Tuscaloosa, Ala., circa 1913, and moved to Chapel Hill, N.C., in 1919. He graduated from Chapel Hill High School, Oak Ridge Military Institute, and the University of North Carolina. He was a veteran of World War II. Prouty worked as a sportswriter, columnist, and photographer for The Chapel Hill Weekly and The Chapel Hill Newspaper. He died on 23 January 1996.

The collection consists of approximately 5,600 black-and-white 120 roll film negatives, 1,900 (mostly) 4x5 black-and-white sheet film negatives, and 53 photographic prints (mostly copies of original negatives discarded due to deterioration). The images document community organizations; events; businesses; churches; schools; sports teams; newsworthy people of local and national significance; and scenes and activities in and around the towns of Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough in Orange County, N.C., between 1955 and 1961. The collection also contains some images of the University of North Carolina, including a set of 35mm color copy slides of the October 1961 University Day visit of President John F. Kennedy. A few North Carolina coastal and mountain locations are also depicted.

The collection is arranged into four series by format, then in order by negative number assigned by the photographer. Descriptions listed below are those provided by the photographer, except where noted in parentheses.

Duplicate negatives and interpositives have been created from some of the sheet film negatives in the Prouty collection (noted below).
