Martin began taking photographs in 1980. His first extended photographic work focused on traveling circuses, a selection of which was published in 1988 under the title Mud Show: American Tent Circus Life (University of New Mexico Press). His North Carolina subjects include Harkers Island, tobacco farming, and Wake County historic buildings. Other subjects (not in this collection) include metropolitan life in New York and in Paris, people reading, night photography, and public posters.
