This collection consists largely of photographic images taken by Louanne Watley, chiefly between the late 1980s and the late 1990s. Images include both black-and-white and color photographic prints, black-and-white 35mm roll film and 120 roll film, and 35mm color roll film and slides. Included in the collection are images from Watley's "Evelyn" series, images of the Helping Hands Mission Band in Durham, N.C., and images of Kentucky women artists, along with other miscellaneous subjects, largely taken in North Carolina and other states in the southeastern United States. The images in the "Evelyn" series were used by author Kathryn Stripling Byer as inspiration for her 2002 collection of poems Catching Light, a fictional memoir of "Evelyn," a former artist's model who is growing old. Byer attended an exhibit including some of these images at City Lights Bookstore in Sylva, N.C., and said, "I can get a voice for this woman." Also included in the collection are artist books created by Watley, along with commercial publications, advertisements, and articles relating to her work.
