I. ("Isaac") Beverly Lake Jr. (1934- ) is a white jurist and public official, active in North Carolina law and politics from 1960 to 2006. Between 1969 and 1976, Lake served as a deputy attorney general for the state of North Carolina. He also served two terms, 1976-1980, as a Democratic state senator in North Carolina. Lake switched parties in 1980 to run for governor of North Carolina, losing to Jim Hunt. He was appointed to the state Superior Court in 1985 and, in 1992, to the state Supreme Court. He won reelection to the state Supreme Court in 1994, and in 2000, he was elected the court's chief justice. His service on the North Carolina Supreme Court ended in 2006, after his 72nd birthday (per North Carolina law). After his retirement from the bench, Lake led efforts to establish the North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission: http://innocencecommission-nc.gov/. This work represented a major shift in Lake's viewpoints on crime and capital punishment, as he had been a vocal proponent of strict sentencing and the death penalty during his tenure in the General Assembly.
