During the time period covered by these records, the university's Construction Administration Department oversaw all major construction projects on the campus, including both original construction and renovations, regardless of funding source. These projects were usually administered by the department following approval by the Facilities Planning and Design Office, the faculty Buildings and Grounds Committee, the Board of Trustees, and the Board of Governors. From 1974 until 1987 the Construction Administration Department was named Engineering and Construction, and prior to that it was the Office of the University Engineer. From 1970 to 1977 it reported to the Director of Operations and Engineering and, from 1977 to 1986, to the Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance. Beginning in 1986, it reported to the newly created Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities Management.
The director of the Construction Administration Department was responsible to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities Management for the timely completion of projects and for inspection of the construction to insure compliance with bid specifications and state regulations. The Construction Administration Department also represented the university at all formal building acceptance inspections and in all building contract disputes.
