During the 1969-1970 academic year, the University Property Division (later Property Office) was established to oversee the increasing legal work of the Chapel Hill campus. Mainly concerned with the acquisition, sale, and rental/lease of real property by and from the university, this office also approved service contracts and agreements; requests for extended or all risk insurance; and automobile liability and workman's compensation coverage. In liaison with officials of state government, it also processed claims (tort, bad check and insurance) against and in behalf of the university. With the exception of limited correspondence, the files are financial in character and include data on the state appropriated and endowment trust funds controlled by the University Property Officer. Logs for requisition and mail processing are also found in this series.
This series includes general files relating to claims against and extensions of state liability coverage of university automobiles. Subseries 2.2. contains records on loss coverage for property temporarily or permanently in university hands.

This series contains files concerning space rented or leased by the university for normal or special operations. Records of faculty rental housing, including rental receipt registers, are found in this series. In addition, lease agreements for special projects as well as for continuing operations are filed in this series. While the faculty housing and receipt registers are organized chronologically, the space leases are arranged by the university division and sub-agency concerned.
