The School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was established, concurrent with the University Medical Center, as a result of the recommendations of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission. Effective 1 August 1950, Elizabeth L. Kemble became dean. The first students were admitted in the fall of 1951 to a four-year program leading to the bachelor of science in nursing degree. In May of 1952 the program was accredited by the National Nursing Accrediting Service, and one year later state approval was given by the North Carolina Board of Nurse Examiners. In April 1953 the school's quarters were completed and dedicated.
During the 1955-1956 year, the curriculum was expanded to include graduate instruction. Master of science programs were offered with majors in administration, teaching, and clinical nursing. These programs were established with the cooperation of the Southern Regional Education Board. In 1961 the school's graduate program received full accreditation. Through a cooperative effort with the university's School of Public Health, a masters program in public health nursing was offered in the fall of 1964. Also in 1964 the School of Nursing established an Office of Continuing Education to supervise its growing extension effort.
In 1968 Lucy H. Conant was appointed dean. The following year the School of Nursing moved to expanded quarters in Carrington Hall. Laurel Archer Copp replaced Conant as dean in 1975. Dean Copp retired in 1990 and was succeeded by Interim Dean Cynthia Freund. Freund was officially appointed Dean of the School of Nursing in 1992 and served until 1998, when she was succeeded by Linda R. Cronenwett.
