Abstract | The Energy Services Department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was created through a 1998 reorganization of the units that comprised Facilities Services. The Energy Services Department assumed the functions of the former Utilities Division, which had been responsible for the operation of the campus electric, telephone, and water and sewer utilities. Records consist chiefly of files related to the management of utilities on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus from 1979 to 2001, including materials related to a number of committees and task groups concerned with the campus utilities. Much of the material relates to compliance with and certification under state and national regulations. There is information on issues such as toxicity, pollution, production, and capacity within the utilities system. Also included are roughly 25 maps and blueprints of the campus and the town of Chapel Hill showing the location of utilities, 1930s-1970s. |

From the 1890s until 1976, the University of North Carolina provided the public utilities for the towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro. In 1976-1977, the university sold the public utilities but retained responsibility for maintenance and distribution of utilities on campus. For much of this period, the campus unit that performed this function was the Utilities Division. From 1970 to 1984, the division reported to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Business; in 1984, it was placed under the Physical Plant, which at that time reported to the Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance. In 1986, the Physical Plant began reporting to the newly created Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities Management, later called Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities Services. The Energy Services Department was created in 1998 through a reorganization of the units that reported to the associate vice chancellor. The Energy Services Department assumed the functions of the former Utilities Division.
