Charles Smallwood of Woodville, Bertie County, N.C., was a planter and physician.

The collection includes a memoir of the town of Woodville, Bertie County, N.C., by Charles Smallwood. Recollections concern local families, an academy, hunting, and other matters, 1830s-1890s, with stories of Revolutionary and colonial incidents that the author gathered from tradition. Also included are three volumes: records of treatment of patients, 1853-1855; records of treatment of patients and general accounts, 1866-1895; and a general ledger listing dry goods purchased and other records, 1880-1881.
